Recently we teamed up with barber shops and salons across Victoria to pilot Cut, Colour, Click, a community-led initiative designed to spark life-saving conversations about seatbelt use.

As trusted community voices, the barbers and stylists will start meaningful conversations with clients on the importance of buckling up on every journey. Smocks featuring a seatbelt sash and the message ‘Seatbelts keep us together’ will be worn by clients to reinforce the message.

Our recent Road Safety Monitor survey of more than 2500 road users found that while most people wore a seatbelt all the time, the minority of those who don’t were growing:

• In the past five years, 1 in 4 drivers and passengers who have died on the state’s roads were not wearing a seatbelt (where seatbelt status was known).
• 4.7% passengers admitted to not wearing a seatbelt.
• 3% had driven without wearing a seatbelt.

These research findings reinforce the need for innovative approaches to educating communities about critical road safety messages.
